Growth in the Mutual Fund Industry: A Comparative Study of India and the United States

Abstract

The mutual fund industry has emerged as an important component of modern financial markets by providing investors with diversified investment opportunities, professional portfolio management, liquidity, and relatively accessible investment products. India and the United States represent two significant but structurally different mutual fund markets, reflecting variations in market maturity, investor participation, regulatory frameworks, product innovation, and technological adoption. This study examines the growth and development of the mutual fund industries in India and the United States through a comparative perspective. The study reviews the evolution of mutual funds, trends in assets under management, investor participation, product diversification, regulatory developments, and the increasing role of digital investment platforms. Particular attention is given to the factors influencing mutual fund growth, including financial literacy, disposable income, demographic characteristics, technological advancement, market performance, and regulatory reforms. The comparative review indicates that while the U.S. mutual fund industry benefits from a highly mature and diversified investment ecosystem, Indias industry has demonstrated substantial growth potential supported by rising household financial participation, systematic investment plans, digital distribution, and increasing awareness of market-based investments. The study provides insights into the similarities and differences between the two markets and identifies opportunities for further development of the Indian mutual fund industry based on lessons from the U.S. market.
