Abstract

The rapid growth of internet penetration, smartphone usage, and digital payment infrastructure has fundamentally transformed the way consumers shop, giving rise to online shopping as a mainstream and increasingly preferred retail channel. Understanding consumer behaviour towards online shopping has therefore become essential for businesses seeking to design effective e-commerce strategies and enhance customer experience. This study examines consumer behaviour towards online shopping by analyzing key factors such as shopping frequency, the influence of price and discounts, product reviews, trust in online payment security, and the role of return and refund policies in shaping purchase decisions. The research explores how these factors collectively influence consumer attitudes, purchase intention, and overall satisfaction with the online shopping experience. A descriptive research design was adopted using both primary and secondary data. Primary data were collected through a structured questionnaire administered to online shoppers across different age groups and occupational backgrounds, while secondary data were obtained from e-commerce industry reports, marketing journals, books, and credible online sources related to digital retail and consumer behaviour. The collected data were analyzed using percentage analysis, mean analysis, and graphical representation to evaluate the patterns and drivers of online shopping behaviour. The findings indicate that price and discounts remain the most influential factor in online purchase decisions, followed closely by product reviews and convenience, while trust in payment security and favourable return and refund policies significantly enhance consumer confidence and satisfaction. However, challenges such as concerns over product quality mismatches, delayed deliveries, and data privacy continue to affect certain segments of online shoppers. The study concludes that e-commerce businesses that prioritize transparent pricing, credible reviews, secure payment systems, and consumerfriendly return policies are better positioned to build long-term trust and loyalty among online shoppers.
