Derivative trading has emerged as an important component of the Indian capital market, providing investors and institutions with instruments for hedging, speculation, arbitrage, and efficient risk management. The Indian derivatives market has witnessed substantial growth in trading activity, particularly in equity futures and options, supported by technological advancements, increased investor participation, improved market infrastructure, and regulatory developments. This study examines the major trends and performance of derivative trading in India, with particular emphasis on market growth, trading volumes, investor participation, risk exposure, and the role of derivatives in price discovery and risk management. The study also evaluates the major risks associated with derivative trading, including market volatility, leverage risk, liquidity risk, counterparty risk, and investor-related risks. Furthermore, it highlights the importance of regulatory mechanisms and investor awareness in maintaining market stability and protecting participants. The study concludes that derivatives can contribute significantly to the efficiency and depth of the Indian capital market when used appropriately for risk management and portfolio diversification. However, sustainable growth requires stronger risk-management practices, greater investor education, effective regulatory supervision, technological resilience, and responsible participation. The future of derivative trading in India is expected to be influenced by digital trading platforms, algorithmic trading, institutional participation, product innovation, and evolving regulatory frameworks.
