Abstract

Rural businesses play a significant role in the economic and cultural development of Gujarat. Traditional handicrafts, handloom products, embroidery, dairy-based products, agricultural innovations, tribal art, pottery, textile designs, food products and small-scale enterprises constitute an important part of the rural economy. However, in the modern digital and competitive marketplace, rural entrepreneurs often face the problem of unauthorized copying, imitation and commercial exploitation of their creative works. Copyright protection can play an important role in safeguarding the original literary, artistic and creative expressions associated with rural businesses. This research paper examines the need for copyright protection of rural businesses in Gujarat. It analyses the relevance of copyright law for artisans, small entrepreneurs and rural creators and highlights challenges relating to lack of awareness, limited legal knowledge, financial constraints and digital piracy. The study adopts a doctrinal and analytical methodology based on statutory provisions, judicial principles and secondary sources. It argues that effective copyright awareness and accessible legal protection are urgently required to preserve rural creativity and ensure economic benefits for original creators. The paper concludes that copyright protection, combined with legal literacy, institutional support and digital awareness, can strengthen rural entrepreneurship and contribute to sustainable economic development in Gujarat.
