Abstract

Rythu Bazars (farmer markets) were established to strengthen direct links between producers and consumers while ensuring fair prices and market access for rural farmers. In recent years, the scope of these markets has expanded beyond traditional staples, with commodities diversification emerging as a critical factor in sustaining farmer incomes and meeting consumer demand. This study explores the role of diversification in shaping socio-economic outcomes for rural farmers participating in Rythu Bazars. Using a mixed-methods approach that combines surveys, interviews, and secondary data analysis, the research investigates how introducing a wider basket of commodities influences income stability, market resilience, bargaining power, and farmer satisfaction. Findings highlight that diversification not only mitigates risks associated with crop seasonality and price volatility but also fosters entrepreneurship and adaptive capacity among rural farming communities. At the same time, challenges such as infrastructure gaps, uneven access to market information, and competition remain persistent barriers. By framing Rythu Bazars as catalysts for inclusive rural development, the paper argues that commodities diversification is not merely a marketing strategy but a pathway toward sustainable farmer empowerment and rural economic resilience.
